I struggled this morning. My bed held me captive and when I did wake up, I felt scattered and unfocused, unsure of where to start or what to do. What do you do when you can’t get out of bed on a Monday morning?

I was tempted to chalk it up to one of those days and hurriedly get into my morning routine. But it’s Monday and I have stuff to do and I know a good solid start to the week sets the tone for the rest of it.

So, I decided to hit the reset button. Instead of trying to muddle and push through the grogginess and flakiness, I gave myself some time. I drank my coffee, I collected my thoughts. I backed off of my to-do list and stopped focusing on what was next. I allowed myself to breathe into it. I found an emotional ground through my five senses, rather than pushing into the day. This is not easy for me, it’s my nature to push, to get it done.

Sometimes it’s ok to give yourself a break from your routine, to recognize that not everyday fits into the plan and that taking a moment to reset might be the perfect step, even if it puts you behind schedule.

Try this Five Senses Mindfulness Exercise from Clayton State University to help you reset when you get off course this week.
